Cameroonian footballer Alexander Song has been sanctioned by the World Football Governing body FIFA for elbowing Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic in the back during Cameroon’s 4-0 loss last Wednesday June 18th, 2014.
Alex Song has been banned for three international matches and ordered to pay a fine of $22,300 (€16,401.6 or CFA10,763,300)
Following an on the pitch red card shown to Song, he was therefore already automatically suspended for Cameroon’s final Group A match against Brazil on Monday 23 June.
According to FIFA, Alex Song will complete his ban in Cameroon’s next two official matches. Cameroon is expected to play for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September 2014 against Ivory Coast and Congo. Alex Song is expected to miss those matches even if he is retained in Cameroon’s National Football squad after the World Cup.
Song was sent off in the 40th minute while Croatia was leading Cameroon by 1-0 in Manaus, Brazil.
